Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Facilities score lower — Guests rate facilities at 6.2, the lowest category, suggesting some amenities may feel dated or underwhelming compared to the rest.
  • Comfort rated 7.5 — While rooms are comfortable, the comfort rating is below other categories, possibly due to historic building quirks or noise in some rooms.
  • Pool may be closed seasonally — The outdoor pool is not open in winter, and first-hand accounts mention it closed in March, so check seasonality before expecting a swim.
  • Dining not as strong as before — One long-time guest notes the cuisine is not as outstanding as in years past, with the best food now in the barbecue garden.

“Great location with a wonderful interior garden and elegant building, right by the inside restaurant, Protestant churches and schools, and the Old City.”

“The picturesque gardens were a peaceful escape and the pool inviting. The charming atmosphere, lovely decor, and unique gift shop nearby were highlights.”

“All the comfort you expect from a luxury hotel (almost), combined with the charm of a historic building. A convenient 10-minute walk from the Old City, with a wonderful patio and garden. The pool was closed during my March stay. Rooms are nicely furnished with typical furniture. Breakfast offers a huge choice of European, American, and some local products. Staff were friendly and helpful, and WiFi was good in the main building's public areas.”

“The American Colony is essential for any visitor to Israel. On the 'seam line', this oasis of peace and beauty shows an ideal achieved. Breakfast or afternoon tea in the courtyard, BBQ in the gardens, or a day by the pool restore the soul. Rooms are spacious and well maintained with simple furniture. Staff are courteous, helpful, and multilingual. The cuisine isn't as outstanding as years ago - the best food is now in the BBQ garden. Don't miss the bookshop and antique store.”
